PRH Welcomes New Urologist

15/5/2026

The Pembroke Regional Hospital is very pleased to introduce Dr. Paulo Werlang, Urologist, and the newest member of its professional staff who brings to the community a high level of clinical expertise and a genuine passion for patient care.

Originally from Brazil, Dr. Werlang’s journey to a career in medicine was initially inspired by first-hand experience at a young age with illness and loss in his family, including the death of his father. He shared that he read a lot about medicine and while no one in his family worked in the medical field at the time, both his brother and cousin later became doctors.

Ultimately, his desire to help others led to the pursuit of a medical degree, which he earned in Brazil.

Why urology? Dr. Werlang shared that his chosen specialty was based on a good experience in urology in medical school, as well as the fact that urology offers a good balance between clinic work and surgery. He adds that it also provides an opportunity to treat a wide range of diseases and conditions affecting both male and female patients of all ages, acknowledging that approximately 70% of his patients are male.

Dr. Werlang met his wife, a high-risk pregnancy obstetrician, Dr. Ana Werlang, in medical school when she was a student and he was a Resident.

She had lived in the US as a teen, enjoyed North America and said she always wanted to move to Canada. That opportunity presented itself when they were both ready to do their Fellowships in 2018.

Most recently, Dr. Werlang completed his Urology Residency and a Urologic Oncology Fellowship at the University of Ottawa, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He also currently serves at The Ottawa Hospital’s Cancer Assessment Clinic, further strengthening his experience in diagnosing and treating complex urologic conditions.

Reflecting on his decision to practice in Pembroke, Dr. Werlang shared that he was drawn to the community’s welcoming, collegial environment and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while developing his skills in an area where there is a great need for his expertise.

Ironically, he notes that he grew up in a small town in Brazil, one that was smaller than Pembroke and also had a percentage of the population with German heritage - much like here.

He also calls himself a “country boy at heart” who enjoys the peace of a rural community, and outdoor activities like camping and fishing.

Since commencing his local practice in April, Dr. Werlang has been dividing his time between Pembroke and Ottawa, working three days at PRH and two in Ottawa where his wife remains with their 11-year-old daughter.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Werlang will also play a role in supporting the hospital’s upcoming implementation of the Epic electronic health information system, where he will serve as a physician Super User to help train and support colleagues.

Dr. Declan Rowan, Chief of Staff at Pembroke Regional Hospital, is pleased to welcome Dr. Werlang to the team.

“Dr. Werlang brings a high level of clinical expertise in urology, along with advanced training in oncology and minimally invasive procedures,” said Dr. Rowan. “His experience, commitment to patient-centred care, and willingness to support innovation, including our upcoming Epic implementation, will be a tremendous asset to our professional staff team and to the patients we serve.”
In his leisure time, Dr. Werlang enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, and even learned how to ski this past winter in order to take on a cold-weather sport.
