Pembroke Regional Hospital is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all staff, physicians, volunteers, patients and visitors. Developing and implementing plans for preventing, mitigating, and responding to potential disasters and emergencies is also an important Accreditation Canada requirement.
As part of our comprehensive emergency preparedness plans, PRH has established a set of emergency response codes based on the Ontario Hospital Association's Emergency Colour Code System. Click here for the 'Quick Tip'.
The first and most vital step of all emergency codes is to call for help by dialing extension 6666 from any phone. Emergency Preparedness Stations have been set up on all departments. The Emergency Preparedness Stations are equipped with Code Captain vests as well as Emergency Preparedness binders that contain the documents you need to guide you through each of the Emergency Codes.
Knowing what do to during an emergency helps keep you as well as patients, visitors, volunteers, and your colleagues safe. Here are some things that you can do to be prepared:
1.Know your role in responding to an Emergency Code by reviewing the Emergency Preparedness Flowsheets and Policies.2.Complete your annual e-learning training for emergency preparedness.3.Participate in emergency code drills where possible.4.Familiarize yourself with the tools at the Emergency Preparedness Stations5.Participate in emergency code debriefs.6.Take part in additional training offered by your department and update your number on the fan-out list
The Emergency Preparedness “Code of the Month” exercises rotate throughout the hospital. All Managers are asked to review the “Code of the Month” with their teams and ensure everyone is aware of the steps they should follow. Our next “Code of the Month” is Code Green.
Members of the Emergency Preparedness Committee continue to perform Code Red drills monthly. If you have a particular interest in practicing a code in your departments, please reach out to your manager to bring forward to the Emergency Preparedness Committee.
For more information, please access the Emergency Preparedness section on the intranet or search Emergency Preparedness/ “code” in the Policy and Procedure manual.
